Virginia AT Day 8
Middle Creek Campground to James River Footbridge
30.25 miles
Today I hiked over Thunder Ridge, Apple Orchard Mountain, and through the James River Wilderness.
It was great walking over the meadowy ridge in the sun and warmth, as last time I was sprinting across in the middle of a storm, worried about getting struck by lightning.
I felt like I’d be in transported back to Oregon while hiking through the James River Wilderness. It was dry, dusty, piney, and you could smell and see the remnants of the Matts Creek wildfire from this past winter.
As I approached the James River footbridge, I felt like I’d been transported back in time to my thru-hike. Despite the signs warning people not to jump into the James River, with massive fines to boot, a group of teenagers were gathered at the bridge, diving and cannonballing into the water one by one. It was the same exact scene four years ago.
I was met by my dear friend Julie and her husband Jeff at the other end of the footbridge, where they whisked me away to their home for a home-cooked meal and a place to stay for the evening. Feeling very thankful!
